Modern furniture designs first started to appear in the 50s with danish designers leading the way. These unique designs have had a cult following ever since and have been growing in popularity in recent years. This is evident by all the reproductions found today, such as online sites like eBay and also at popular stores such as Ikea.
With all the new danish modern furniture design options in the 50’s a large amount of people began making the switch from traditional deco to modern deco. These original modern pieces is now considered retro furniture by most and is a popular choice for adding a unique design to your home.
Retro furniture can be hard to come bye but if you don’t mind there are new remakes of most popular retro pieces available. Some great remakes include Arne Jacobsen’s fabulous egg chair and the Heywood Wakefield aristocrat chairs. Heywood Wakefield has also began remaking some of there popular designs again. Of course if you want a original piece they can be pricey at your local antique shops but every now and then you can find these pieces for a good price at garage sales, estate sales and local antique auctions.
One thing to keep in mind is just because it was made in the 50’s and 60’s doesn’t mean its of modern danish design, so make sure its the style your looking for before you spend your money. Most of the danish designs are very simple and basic designs with smooth lines and shapes. They are also made from teak or rosewood most of the time. Other popular material choices such as leather and metal were also used in many of the danish pieces. These high quality materials is a reason there are and abundant amount of these 60 year old pieces of furniture still around.
Unfortunately some pieces still managed to get damage over the years from wear and tear. The good news is these pieces can usually be restored to bring back its unique look. Depending on how good you are with tools you can do this yourself or pay to have it professionally done.
